Six Lessons We’ve Learned Supporting Regional Queensland Communities
Over the past 15 years, QCoal Foundation has funded hundreds of community-led initiatives across regional and remote Queensland. While every project has been different, a common theme has emerged: communities know what they need, and lasting impact happens when local people are empowered to lead local solutions.
Since 2011, the QCoal Foundation Community Grant Program has invested more than $1.6 million into regional and remote Queensland, supporting 110+ organisations across 28 Local Government Areas. Alongside funding projects that enhance health, education and liveability, we’ve gained valuable insights into what makes community grantmaking effective.
Here are six key lessons we’ve learned along the way.
- Accessible grant programs create greater impact
For many regional and remote organisations, time and resources are limited. Simplifying application processes and increasing transparency helps remove barriers to funding, ensuring great projects aren’t overlooked because of administrative complexity.
Greater impact is created when organisations spend less time navigating paperwork and more time focusing on creating positive change in their communities.
- Having local voices in the room
The involvement of volunteer Community Reviewers has been a critical component of the QCoal Foundation Community Grant Program. They provide insights to the Board so decision-making is grounded in local realities and ensure funding decisions are informed by people with firsthand understanding of community needs.
- Small grants can lead to bigger opportunities
Grant funding is often viewed as a way to deliver immediate outcomes, but it is also a catalyst for innovation and growth.
Many funded projects have provided organisations with the opportunity to trial new ideas, test solutions and demonstrate impact. In some cases, these early initiatives have created pathways to larger collaborations and longer-term partnerships.
- Multiple types of support are needed
Strong communities are built through both grassroots initiatives and larger-scale programs. From local leadership, volunteer-driven initiatives, established services and strategic partnerships, an effective grant program should not pigeonhole its funding, but be open to a wider range of projects.
- The value of funding extends beyond the dollars
Some of the most meaningful outcomes can’t be measured financially. Grant funding can build organisational confidence, strengthen local capability, create new partnerships and foster deeper community connections. These outcomes are hard to measure but are often the foundations of lasting change.
- Listening to communities leads to better funding decisions
One of the most valuable aspects of our grant program is the collection of Community Voice Data. Through our grant program we are constantly collecting data and feedback to help identify the current challenges facing regional and remote communities and using these insights to inform funding decisions.
By listening to the voices of both our applicants and our volunteer Community Reviewers, we’ve built an evolving picture of the challenges, opportunities and priorities emerging across regional Queensland. This continuous feedback loop helps ensure our funding remains informed by lived experience and responsive to changing community needs.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate 15 years of the QCoal Foundation Community Grant Program, we’re reminded that effective philanthropy is not simply about providing funding. It’s about listening, learning and partnering with communities to support the solutions they believe will make the greatest difference.
The lessons continue to shape our approach, and we remain committed to supporting the organisations creating positive change across regional and remote Queensland. Our hope is that our learnings can be applied to other programs, creating stronger processes where funding decisions, processes and community voice, work together for a better future.
