Christopher Wallin Prize for Excellence in Geology Extended for Three More Years
The QCoal Foundation is delighted to announce that the Christopher Wallin Prize for Excellence in Geology has been renewed for a further three years, continuing its support of aspiring geologists at James Cook University (JCU).
The prize recognises the highest performing second-year geology student at JCU with $2,000 and the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience through a paid work placement with QCoal Group’s Geology Team. Thanks to the ongoing commitment of the QCoal Foundation, more passionate geology students will receive the Christopher Wallin Prize for Excellence in Geology.
This continued investment reflects the Foundation’s dedication to supporting students, developing future industry leaders, and creating meaningful pathways into rewarding careers.

The award has already demonstrated its impact through the success of past recipients. Last year’s recipient, Lucy Bye, completed a work placement with QCoal Group and has since secured a graduate geologist position within the Queensland mining industry.
Reflecting on the experience, Lucy said the award provided benefits that extended well beyond financial support.
“The Christopher Wallin Prize for Excellence in Geology was extremely beneficial not just for the fact that I could list this accomplishment on future applications and for the burst of motivation and affirmation of my hard work during my degree, but also for the work experience that came with the prize,” Lucy said.
“I truly value my time spent with the QCoal Group as I not only made professional connections and friendships with their Geology team but was exposed to a professional setting within the mining industry by encouraging and welcoming people. This gave me an inside look into the industry – something that was never possible in a university setting.”
The extension of the prize also marks the continuation of the QCoal Foundation’s partnership with James Cook University, which has spanned more than a decade and continues to support students from regional and remote Queensland.
Through initiatives such as the Christopher Wallin Prize for Excellence in Geology, QCoal Foundation continues to invest in the next generation of geologists, helping students develop the skills, experience and industry connections needed to build successful careers while contributing to a strong and sustainable future workforce for Queensland’s resources sector.
