Building resilient regional and remote Queensland communities.

Regional Experience (REX) Program

Communities in rural and remote Queensland can face challenges attracting skilled professionals and need to compete in different ways, including emphasising quality of life, to attract people to live and work in their community.

The REX Program was developed in response to this challenge. Originally established through collaboration between QCoal Foundation, Morris Corporation, James Cook University (JCU) and the Collinsville community, the REX program has now grown to include the community of Dysart.

REX is a whole of community career experience program offering placements across a range of disciplines within a single community for a set period. In addition to placement with a local employer, REX participants are involved in a number of community activities during the program.

Past students who have participated in the program have provided overwhelmingly positive feedback about the opportunity to gain valuable career experience while completing their studies. The REX program is currently only open to students studying at James Cook University, Townsville campus. Further information on the program and how to apply is available on the JCU REX program page. In the future there may be opportunities to expand the REX program further. Contact us if you believe the REX program could be delivered in your community.
